Award for total rehabilitation
Bratsberg received Skien Council’s Preservation Award for Hollenderiet in 2019. Klosterøya’s oldest factory building from 1907 has been completely rehabilitated and tranformed into ultra-modern business premises. Together with the factory chimney and gatehouse, Hollenderiet is an important piece of cultural heritage from Skien’s industrial past. Bratsberg’s rehabilitation of Hollenderiet has secured an important piece of historical documentation set around 100 years’ paper production in Skien. Furthermore, in its case for putting Hollenderiet forward for the award, Skien Council writes that it offers an aesthetic enrichment to all who frequent the area.
Location
Hollenderiet is situated on Uniontorget, surrounded by an upper secondary school, a number of office buildings and services. Fitness centre, hairdresser’s and food and drink areas can also be found here.
Safe walking and cycling paths mean Hollenderiet is only a short distance from the shopping centre and Skien town centre. Klosterøya is served by Grenland’s bus routes and the main road, which are just three minutes’ walk away.
Several residential developments are underway on Klosterøya. The property is a part Skien’s urban development around the water, which will eventually join Klosterøya and Skien closer together.
About the property
Hollenderiet has been rehabilitated and transformed into an ultra-modern business space with a renewed industrial atmosphere. High ceilings and windows provide ample lighting. The ground floor possesses certain special qualities both inside and out, with a west-facing sundrenched patio by the main entrance. The café is located on the ground floor.
The different floors contain both open plan and separate offices, rooms for health treatment and training, and meeting rooms.
Hollenderiet, was previously part of Klosterfossen paper factory, where pulp was produced with equipment known as «hollender». Hollenderiet has been recreated in its original style, with tall steel windows and arched tops on all facades. The bricks in the facades have been preserved, and the original openings in the constructions are reclaimed.
